X-X Mitchell's - Whittier, CA - Vintage Restaurant - Unisex T-Shirt

X-X Mitchell's was an old restaurant in the 1960s, located at 11464 E. Whittier Blvd in Whittier, California. Mitchell’s Cafe was started by two brothers, James Lee Mitchell and Xenophon Xavier Mitchell, in Whittier, California in 1934 near Whittier College. Family lore has it that the brothers were short on cash at the beginning, so when a customer paid for a meal, one of the brothers would go out to the butcher to buy more meat to get through the lunch demand. James did some work in Hollywood as a stunt pilot and managed Sontag Drug Stores, leaving the management of the café to Xenophon (who went by the name, “X”). When World War II started in Europe, before the US was involved, James volunteered for the Royal Canadian Air Force to fly bombers to England. He was lost at sea in January, 1942. X changed the name to X. X. Mitchell’s in the 1940s when he expanded the business from a café to a restaurant and cocktail lounge with nightly entertainment at the concert grand piano bar.
