The Desert Inn Hotel and Casino opened on April 24, 1950, becoming one of the most iconic resorts of early Las Vegas. Known for its elegant design and upscale atmosphere, it quickly became a favorite for high rollers and Hollywood elite. The resort’s famous golf course, added in 1952, hosted the PGA Tour’s Tournament of Champions for over a decade. Howard Hughes famously purchased the Desert Inn in 1967 after management asked him to leave his penthouse. After 50 years of operation, the Desert Inn closed on August 28, 2000, and was later demolished to make way for Wynn Las Vegas.
