Bob Lee’s Islander was a legendary Polynesian-Chinese restaurant and tiki bar located at 12 Tyler Street in Boston’s Chinatown. Originally opened in 1951 as Bob Lee’s Lantern House, it underwent a dramatic transformation in 1961, embracing the tiki craze and rebranding as the Islander. The interior was a sensory delight, featuring vibrant, high-contrast carpeting, ceiling coverings, and tropical décor that created a truly immersive experience. The menu offered a fusion of Chinese and Polynesian dishes, complemented by exotic cocktails from the Aloha Lounge, including their signature Scorpion Bowl. The Islander closed in 1977, but the memory of Bob Lee’s Islander endures as a cherished part of Boston’s mid-century tiki culture. This design is part of our vintage retro collection, celebrating the defunct golden era tiki bars of yesteryear.
